The Soldier Who Never Returned

  The Soldier Who Never Returned
LI: To understand the story in the poem

There’s a bottle of beer in the Waiho Forks bar,
From the rest on the shelf it stands out like a star.
For its shape is old fashioned and it just might be purple
And the label proclaims that its “Ballins Four X”
It was bought a long time ago by a young soldier brave;
On his final leave home, these are the instructions he gave.
“Don’t break it or sell it, just keep it in store,
And we’ll drink it when I come back home from the war.”
He was killed overseas on the Island of Crete
When they battled it out with the German elite.
There’s a headstone but nobody knows where he lies,
If he sleeps his last sleep ‘neath the sea or the skies

But the bottle still remains at the Country Hotel,
A memorial stands to a soldier who fell,
And travellers and locals take time out to think
Of the soldier who never came home for his drink.
And somehow a glow by the bottle is shed
As poppies surround it and edge it with red,
For each Anzac Day there’s a new one to put there
And they lie like a wreath round that bottle of beer.
There are many stone cairns scattered over the land
But I wonder how many are polished by hand.
Though the cap is all rusty and outshines the chrome,
As it waits for the soldier who never came home.

  1. Highlight the rhyming words in yellow

  1. This is a narrative style poem as it tells a story. Explain why the bottle of beer is still on the shelf.  The bottle of beer is still on the shelf because the soldier said not to break it or sell it and he said that they will drink it when he returned, and the people are still waiting for the soldier who never returned.
  1. What does ANZAC stand for?  ANZAC means Australia, New Zealand Army Corps
  1. What is a cairn?  Cairn is a pile of stones.

  1. How does this poem make you feel? Why?  This poem makes me feel happy because they had saved our home, but I also felt sad because a lot beloved family members were killed.

Rememberance Poppies

Remembrance Poppies
Poppies are forever linked with Anzac Day, dating back to the WW1. They are a worldwide symbol of remembrance for the men and women who have died serving their country. Poppies made of light cloth or paper are also woven together to form wreaths which are laid at war memorials up and down the country. The poppies are a reminder of the sacrifice - the lives lost - in war.

The red or Flanders poppy was one of the first to grow and bloom in the mud and soil of Flanders. They were made famous by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in his poem 'In Flanders fields'. McCrae was a Canadian medical officer who, in May 1915, had conducted the funeral service of a friend.  In a cemetery nearby, red poppies blew gently in the breeze. He saw this as a symbol of regrowth in a landscape of blood and destruction. He was upset at the death and suffering around him and wrote the verse in his notebook. Someone sent his words anonymously to the English magazine, Punch, which published them under the title 'In Flanders Fields' on 8 December 1915.

In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row.
That mark our place; and in the sky
The Larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard among the guns below.
We are the dead.  Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields
Take our quarrel with the foe
To you from falling hands we throw,
The torch be yours to hold up high.
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow,
In Flanders Fields
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

  1. Where is Flanders Field? Flanders field is in a country called Belgium.
  2. What grows in Flanders field? The red poppies grow in Flanders field, and represent how nature regrow.
  3. “To you from failing hands we throw”.  Who do the falling hands represent and what have they thrown? The failing hands represent how some of the soldiers never make it back alive, and they have thrown a torch.
  4. “If ye break faith with us who die..”  What does the writer mean by ‘break faith’? Break faith means a lot of people are breaking faith and are disrespecting them.

Vietnam War

War is a legalized violence against two or more countries and the war that I am studding is about the Vietnam.  The youngest men killed were 16 years old and the older man killed was 62 years old.  During the Vietnam war the many of the Americans women were wounded.

The Vietnam war started in 1957 and the Vietnam war was between the North and south Vietnam, this conflict started because the north Vietnam wanted to live the way that the south Vietnam were and some of the south Vietnamese agreed and a lot of the disagreed.  On the Allied Troop which is known as the south Vietnam .

During the war the war there were many new weapons invented by the Russians and they were tanks and snipers, and later on they invented a weapon called ancient orange they used this weapon to kill all the vegetations to make it harder for the allied troops and the snipers to hide and killed a lot of people. There a lot of people that lost their lives and it was about 6 million people and New Zealand lost 32 soldiers.

The conflict was resolved because U.S. backed out of the war and the North Vietnamese were outnumbered so they gave up and the South Vietnamese took over Saigon and named it Ho Chi Min city after a famous leader from the North Vietnam.  Now Vietnam is one communist country.

20 years after the war a lot of the Allied Troops and Vietnamese were very ill and this was caused by the ancient orange.

The oldest man killed was 62 years old and the five men that were killed were only 16 years old, and the war affected a lot of American woman's were wounded.
